Introduction: A Disturbing Trend Within Global Orthodoxy The Eastern Orthodox Church has long stood as a bastion of spiritual truth, ascetic integrity, and the apostolic witness of Jesus Christ. Rooted in the blood of the martyrs, the wisdom of the Desert Fathers, and the unbroken traditions of the Ecumenical Councils, Orthodoxy has weathered countless storms: empires have risen and fallen, heresies have come and gone, but the Church has remained steadfast. However, in our own day, a shadow has crept into the Church from within. Wolves have entered in, not in pagan garb or secular ideology, but wearing the sacred vestments of bishops, chanting liturgical words with unholy intent, and kneeling not before Christ the King, but before the thrones of temporal power. This is not merely a cautionary metaphor, it is a tragic and dangerous reality unfolding before our very eyes. Nowhere is this more visible than in the growing cult of personality surrounding Vladimir Putin and the so-called "Patriarch" Alexey Ridiger (also known as Patriarch Kirill), whose complicity in state-sponsored violence, propaganda, and spiritual corruption has become a scandal to the Orthodox faithful around the world. The New Tsar and His Court Puppet: Putin and Alexey Vladimir Putin, a former KGB agent, has cast himself as the defender of traditional Christianity, the protector of Orthodox values, and the restorer of Russian greatness. At his side stands Patriarch Kirill, formerly Alexey Ridiger, also reportedly tied to the KGB and long complicit in the machinations of Soviet and post-Soviet power structures. Together, they have forged a blasphemous alliance, a hybrid of imperial nostalgia, state coercion, and counterfeit religion. In this twisted vision, the Church does not challenge the injustice of the state, but blesses it. It does not comfort the poor and oppressed, but rather justifies their suffering for the sake of “national destiny.” The cross is no longer a symbol of sacrificial love but of conquest and domination. Kirill has not merely remained silent in the face of war crimes, he has actively endorsed them. His statements defending Russia’s brutal invasion of Ukraine are not aberrations; they are the outgrowth of a carefully cultivated doctrine of ethno-religious nationalism that seeks to revive the myth of Holy Russia, not as a spiritual ideal, but as a geopolitical weapon. The Inversion of the Beatitudes Let us remember the Sermon on the Mount, the heart of Christian ethics:
The Genocide of Ukraine: A Sin Against God and Humanity What is happening in Ukraine is not merely a conflict between two nations, it is an effort to erase a people, their culture, their language, their Church, and their very memory. The parallels to Stalin’s genocidal famine, the Holodomor of 1932–1933, are horrifyingly clear. Then, as now, the Ukrainian people are targeted for their identity, language, and desire to live free from imperial domination. Kirill and his inner circle have offered not resistance to this horror, but theological justification. They have baptized tanks and missiles, spoken of "metaphysical wars" against the West, and dared to call a bloody invasion “a just cause.” Such actions desecrate the very Name of Christ. Holy Silence and Holy Courage: The Suffering of Righteous Russians Let us be clear: not all within the Russian Orthodox Church are complicit. There are many, many faithful priests, monks, nuns, and laity, holy men and women who live lives of prayer, love, and service. But most are silenced by fear. Some, like Fr. Ioann Burdin of Kostroma, who preached against the war and was arrested, have dared to speak out. Others live under threat of excommunication, arrest, or worse. Putin and Kirill have not hesitated to retaliate against any dissent within their ranks, using the tools of surveillance, denunciation, and even violence. As we pray for the people of Ukraine, we must also pray for these hidden martyrs: the Russian Orthodox faithful who remain true to Christ in secret, the prophets who have been silenced, and the righteous who bear the burden of being trapped in a Church now weaponized for wickedness. A Word to Other Orthodox Jurisdictions: ROCOR, OCA, and Others Who Remain Aligned with the Moscow Patriarchate For those in other Orthodox jurisdictions, especially the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia (ROCOR), the Orthodox Church in America (OCA), and various other groups, who still offer spiritual, canonical, or moral support to the unholy actions and ideology of the Moscow Patriarchate, we must speak with painful clarity: Reflect deeply on your stance. Look not only at the words but the fruits of the Moscow Patriarchate under Patriarch Kirill. Look at the public declarations made by its leadership, blessing an unprovoked war of aggression against a sovereign people. Look at how they have twisted theology to justify slaughter, calling it a "metaphysical battle" and glorifying war as sacrificial obedience. Look at the human cost. Millions displaced. Tens of thousands killed, many of them fellow Orthodox, many of them ethnic Russians born and raised in Ukraine. Look at the desecration: Orthodox churches bombed, liturgies halted, children orphaned, monasteries turned into rubble. The schools, libraries, hospitals, and neighborhoods turned to ash, all with the blessing and encouragement of Kirill, the court puppet of a new Caesar. These are not “collateral damages.” They are spiritual abominations, perpetrated with incense and icons, and blessed with empty chants of false piety. If, after seeing all this, your diocese/eparchy, your bishops, or your jurisdiction still clings to allegiance with Moscow, then you must be told the truth plainly: You are siding with evil. You have lost all connection to the True Church and to Christ. You have exchanged the Cross for the sword of empire. You have replaced the humility of Christ with the arrogance of tyrants. The time for silence has passed. The time for neutrality is over. We call upon you, with love and urgency, to open your eyes and see what is truly happening. To follow Christ, not Caesar. To stand with the majority of global Orthodoxy who see this evil for what it is and who have the courage to name it. “He who is not with Me is against Me,” says the Lord. (Matthew 12:30) “Have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather expose them.” (Ephesians 5:11) This is not a matter of politics. It is a matter of faithfulness to the Gospel. A matter of obedience to Christ, not to patriarchs who serve themselves and earthly thrones. Come back. Return. Repent. The Church of Christ is waiting. A Call to Vigilance: Test the Spirits Saint Paul exhorts us: “Test all things; hold fast to that which is good.” (1 Thess. 5:21). And so we must. If a bishop or patriarch preaches power instead of humility, silence instead of truth, violence instead of peace, then that man is not a shepherd, but a wolf. If a Church aligns itself with empire instead of with the Cross, it has ceased to be the Body of Christ and has become an arm of Antichrist. And if you see Orthodoxy in your country being infiltrated by propaganda, nationalism, or the cult of Putin or any tyrant, beware. Question what is preached. Study the Gospels. Read the Fathers. Do not be led astray by ornate vestments or golden thrones. The devil himself can wear the garments of light. The True Orthodox Path: Rooted in Christ, Not Caesar We must reclaim Orthodoxy, not as a cultural identity, not as a weapon of war, and certainly not as a means of domination, but as the way of the crucified and risen Christ. Orthodoxy is the path of humility, repentance, compassion, and holiness. It is the voice of St. John Chrysostom crying against imperial injustice. It is the prayer of the monk in his cell weeping for the sins of the world. It is the icon of the Theotokos offering her Son to the world, not for conquest, but for salvation. We must not allow the Church to become a puppet or throne of tyrants. We must not exchange the Gospel for flags and medals. Conclusion: Stand Firm in the Light of Christ - Beware of Russian Wolves in Orthodox Vestments Beware of those who co-opt Orthodoxy to serve nationalism. Beware of any Church that echoes the voice of Caesar rather than the voice of Christ. To every Orthodox Christian reading these words: If what is preached in the name of Patriarch Kirill, Vladimir Putin or any Tyrant does not stand in the light of the Gospels, if it does not align with the Beatitudes, the commandments, and the consensus of the Holy Fathers, reject it. Flee from it. Stand apart from it, lest you become complicit in it. Our allegiance is not to Moscow, or any capitol city. It is not to Putin. It is not to any Tyrant or modern day Caesar. It is not to any Patriarch who blesses genocide. Our allegiance is to Jesus Christ, the Prince of Peace, the crucified Lord, the risen Savior of the world. A Final Prayer O Lord of Peace, Grant courage to the righteous in Russia, Comfort to the suffering in Ukraine, Discernment to the faithful around the world, And justice to all who twist Thy Church for their own wicked ends. Strengthen the Church to shine with Thy Light, And let not the darkness overcome it. Amen.
