Today the Holy Orthodox Church commemorates our Venerable Father Michael the Confessor, Bishop of Synadon, a fearless defender of the holy icons, a faithful shepherd of Christ’s flock, a miracle-worker, diplomat, ascetic, and confessor of the Orthodox Faith.

From his childhood, Saint Michael dedicated himself entirely to God. Leaving behind worldly ambition, he embraced the monastic life together with Saint Theophylaktos under the guidance of Saint Tarasios of Constantinople. Through prayer, fasting, humility, and obedience, the two monks became radiant vessels of divine grace. God Himself glorified them through miracles, even filling an empty vessel with water during a time of severe thirst among the people.

Yet Saint Michael’s life was not one merely of quiet asceticism. The Lord raised him up as a bishop, defender of Holy Orthodoxy, and participant in the Seventh Ecumenical Council in Nicaea in 787, where he boldly upheld the veneration of the holy icons against the iconoclast heresy. He understood that icons are not idols, but sacred windows into Heaven, proclaiming the truth of the Incarnation: that God truly became man in the Person of Jesus Christ.

Saint Michael also served the Empire in difficult and dangerous times, carrying out diplomatic missions to the court of Charlemagne and even negotiating peace with the Abbasid Caliph Harun al-Rashid. Yet despite his wisdom and respected position, his true greatness was revealed when persecution came.

Under the iconoclast Emperor Leo the Armenian, Saint Michael refused to betray the Orthodox Faith. Standing before the emperor without fear, he courageously proclaimed:

“The immaculate icon of our Lord and God and Savior Jesus Christ and His divine Mother I piously revere and venerate.”

For this confession, he was deposed, persecuted, exiled, and forced to endure many sufferings. But like the martyrs and confessors before him, Saint Michael understood that earthly power passes away, while the truth of Christ endures forever.

Even after his repose in exile in 818, God continued to glorify His saint. Through his holy relics, entire regions were delivered from devastating locust plagues, and countless faithful received help and healing through his intercessions.

Saint Michael reminds us that Orthodoxy is not preserved through compromise, comfort, or silence, but through courage, faithfulness, humility, and steadfast love for Christ and His Holy Church. In an age where many are pressured to conform to the spirit of the world, the life of Saint Michael calls us to remain firm in the truth handed down by the Holy Fathers.

Holy Father Michael the Confessor, intercede before Christ our God for us, for the protection of our homes, crops, communities, and for the salvation of our souls.
