In the American mythos, we often romanticize the rugged individualism of pioneers, the brave settlers who stood against the might of wealthy cattle barons and railroad tycoons. But history is not always romantic, those homesteaders were often crushed, their voices drowned out by the moneyed few who dictated the rules of commerce, land, law and politics. Fast forward to today, and we see something strikingly similar playing out, not on the dusty plains of the 1800s, but in the sterile, algorithm-driven corridors of Big Tech, most notably within the ever-expanding empire of Meta’s Facebook. Just as the cattle barons once dominated the landscape and crushed opposition under the weight of their wealth and influence, today’s modern-day oligarchs, the tech billionaires and corporate elites, seem determined to shape our public discourse and spiritual conscience through invisible, unaccountable control over digital platforms. They silence voices not because of violence or hate, but because those voices dare to speak out for the poor, the immigrant, the unhoused, and the marginalized, precisely the people Christ called us to care for. A Personal Experiment: Two Facebook Accounts, Two Realities I didn’t come to this realization lightly. Like many others, I had long believed that Meta’s claims to protect “community standards” and foster “safe online dialogue” were at least well-intentioned. But over the past few weeks, I’ve seen firsthand how this narrative collapses under the weight of experience. Curious, and increasingly concerned, about why my own personal Facebook page, rooted in traditional Christian theology and liberal compassion, was seeing more frequent blocks, I decided to run a little experiment. I created a second Facebook account that openly embraced far-right political content, Trumpism, and the worldview of Nationalist Evangelical Christianity. The results were stark and unambiguous.
This is not an accident. This is not some benign technical quirk. This is a clear, disturbing pattern. Meta and its platform are actively encouraging a particular ideological direction, and it is not the one Christ calls us to follow. The Dangerous Symbiosis of Big Tech and the Far-Right Agenda What we are seeing is not just corporate overreach; it is digital authoritarianism, the kind that slowly chokes the voice of dissent under the guise of “safety” and “policy enforcement.” It rewards the powerful and punishes the poor. It amplifies hate while silencing love. It venerates the flag over the Cross and weaponizes the name of Jesus for political control rather than spiritual transformation. The far-right agenda, particularly in its Evangelical/Nationalist form, has become a vehicle not for Christ’s love and justice, but for authoritarianism, exclusion, and fear. And this agenda is increasingly being protected and promoted by the very tech giants that claim to be neutral. Why? Because division is profitable. Outrage is addictive. And authoritarianism ensures that power stays exactly where they want it—with them. They do not want Christians talking about:
Liberal = Traditional Christianity Let us be very clear: when we speak of “liberal” Christianity in this context, we are not referring to some watered-down theology or post-modern moral relativism. We are speaking about traditional, biblical Christianity, rooted in the teachings of Jesus Christ, the witness of the early Church, and the lives of the saints. It is a faith that insists on caring for “the least of these,” lifting up the broken, and proclaiming the radical humility and mercy of the Gospel. It is the Christianity of Saint Basil the Great, who demanded that the rich use their wealth to serve the poor. It is the Christianity of Saint Maria of Paris, who perished in a Nazi concentration camp because she chose to love the stranger. It is the Christianity of the Desert Fathers, who renounced imperial comfort to live in truth and ascetic compassion. And yet, this is precisely the kind of Christianity that today’s oligarchs find threatening, because it cannot be bought, controlled, or used to support their profit-driven, nationalist agendas. The Stakes Are High This is not simply a grievance about Facebook policies. This is about the soul of our civilization. When the voice of Christ-centered compassion is systematically silenced, while the voice of hatred, greed, and political idolatry is magnified, we are watching democracy unravel and spiritual integrity decay. The algorithm does not care about theology. It cares about power and engagement. And right now, it is increasingly siding with those who would turn America into a theocratic autocracy ruled not by Christ, but by Caesar disguised in business suits and a red tie. We must not be silent.
A Final Call To those who believe in the true Gospel of Jesus Christ, the time has come to resist, not with violence or hate, but with holy conviction. The cattle barons of old were not stopped by silence. They were stopped by brave, ordinary people who refused to be bought or intimidated. We are called to no less. So rise up, Church. Proclaim the Gospel boldly. Denounce injustice fearlessly. And remind the world that Christ is not the servant of Empire—but its Judge. If we do not wake up now, we may soon find ourselves in a world where the only Christian voices allowed are those who have sold their soul to the highest bidder. Let us choose differently. Let us follow Christ. Let us speak truth, even if we must speak it from the margins. “Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven.” (Matthew 5:10)
