Metropolitan Andrei offered a profound word of spiritual instruction entitled “Spiritual Light,” reminding the faithful that our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ is the true Light Who illumines both body and soul. Reflecting upon the words of Christ: “I am the Light of the world; whoever follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life” (John 8:12), the Metropolitan emphasized that apart from Christ, the human person remains in spiritual darkness, unable to perceive the path that leads to salvation and true communion with God. Though the eyes of the body may see the world around us, the soul itself can become blind through sin, pride, and attachment to earthly passions. This spiritual blindness is far more dangerous than physical blindness, because it darkens the heart and separates man from the life-giving presence of God. For this reason, the hierarch reminded the faithful that drawing near to Christ through prayer, repentance, the Holy Mysteries, and a life rooted in the Gospel is the only way to preserve spiritual sight and remain in the light of truth. At the same time, Metropolitan Andrei warned of the three great passions through which the devil seeks to blind the souls of men: the love of wealth, the love of vainglory and worldly advancement, and the love of pleasure. These passions captivate the heart, cloud the mind, and slowly extinguish the spiritual vision that allows a person to recognize God’s presence and will. The love of wealth teaches the soul to trust in possessions rather than in God. The love of worldly honor and advancement feeds pretension, self-exaltation, and the desire to be praised by others. The love of pleasure enslaves the heart to temporary satisfactions, drawing man away from purity, prayer, and inner stillness. Together, these passions become chains that keep the soul bound to darkness. Yet Christ, the true Light, continues to call every person out of that darkness. He opens the eyes of the soul through repentance, humility, and love. Whoever follows Him, even amid the trials and confusion of this world, will not remain lost in spiritual night, but will walk in the light of life.
