OUR  MINISTRIES

Our Ministries and Outreach Programs

Welcome to our Ministries and Outreach Programs page. As a monastic community rooted in the ancient tradition of the Eastern Orthodox Church and shaped by the spiritual ethos of the Desert Fathers, we are called to live not only in prayer and asceticism, but also in compassionate service to the world around us.

The monks of our Hermitage have prayerfully established a number of ministries that reflect both our monastic calling and our deep concern for the suffering and forgotten. These initial efforts are small but heartfelt, each one born from our life of prayer, our experience of Christ’s mercy, and our desire to extend that mercy to others.

Among our ministries are programs dedicated to military veterans and their families, outreach to our Indigenous brothers and sisters in the Southwest, and compassionate service to the unhoused and poor of Tucson. These ministries are not simply projects, they are extensions of our prayer life and expressions of our love for Christ in every human face.

While these are our foundational ministries, we trust that, through the grace of the Holy Spirit, they will grow in both reach and impact. In time, and as God wills, we hope to expand these efforts to meet the ever-evolving needs of those we are called to serve.
We invite you to explore these ministries, pray for their fruitfulness, and walk with us as we seek to serve Christ in every person.

1) Arizona Orthodox Military & Veteran Outreach - is a ministry devoted to bringing the healing light of Eastern Orthodox Christianity to those who have borne the heavy burden of military service. With particular compassion for the families of the fallen and for veterans who continue to suffer the invisible wounds of war, spiritual, emotional, and psychological, this outreach stands as a sacred offering of prayer, presence, and pastoral care.

Rooted in the Church’s tradition of honoring sacrifice and tending to the brokenhearted, our monks serve through prayerful support, and spiritual companionship for veterans and their loved ones. We offer liturgical memorials, blessings, and guidance to help those affected by war find peace in Christ.

In the spirit of unity and shared mission, we actively collaborate with local veteran and military service organizations, including the Marana Veterans Memorial Cemetery, the Veterans Administration, the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), and the American Legion. These partnerships allow us to serve more effectively and honorably, extending our ministry beyond monastic boundaries and into the heart of the veteran community.

Through this outreach, we strive to create sacred space, where remembrance, healing, and hope are cultivated through the life-giving tradition of the Orthodox Church. In every veteran and every grieving family, we see the image of Christ, and in serving them, we fulfill our call to love without condition.

2) Eastern Orthodox – Indigenous Peoples Outreach - is a ministry of St. Basil of the Desert Eastern Orthodox Hermitage, located in Tucson, Arizona. This outreach program is dedicated to fostering respectful dialogue and spiritual connection between the Eastern Orthodox Church and our Indigenous Peoples communities in the Southwestern United States.

Rooted in the ancient traditions of Eastern Orthodox Christianity, the program offers pastoral counseling, prayer services to help individuals find healing and peace. Recognizing the unique challenges faced by Indigenous communities, the ministry seeks to create a compassionate community where they can experience the love of Christ and the support of the Church.

Through its commitment to serving Indigenous brothers and sisters, the Eastern Orthodox – Indigenous Peoples Outreach embodies the Church's mission to bring comfort to the brokenhearted and to stand in solidarity with those who have been historically marginalized.

3) Eastern Orthodox Unhoused & Resource Insecurity Outreach - Tucson, AZ - is a compassionate ministry rooted in the Gospel call to serve “the least of these.” Inspired by the mercy and hospitality of Christ, this outreach seeks to bring the presence of the Orthodox Church to our unhoused and impoverished brothers and sisters in the Tucson area.

Guided by the ancient tradition of the Eastern Orthodox Church and the example of the Desert Fathers, our monks actively engage in direct service, distributing food, clothing, hygiene items, and offering prayer and spiritual companionship. We understand that true healing comes through both material assistance and the loving presence of Christ, and we strive to offer both.

In a spirit of unity and collaboration, we work alongside local charitable organizations, shelters, and outreach programs to expand our impact and respond more effectively to the needs of the community. Through these partnerships, we build bridges of compassion and extend the mission of the Church beyond hermitage walls.

This ministry is not simply an act of charity, it is a sacred encounter with Christ in the suffering and the marginalized. Each person we serve is a living icon of God, and through this outreach, we reaffirm their dignity, worth, and belovedness.

4) Eastern Orthodox - Immigrant, Refugee & Asylum Seeker Outreach - In response to recent government cuts to vital services for immigrants, refugees, and asylum seekers, the Monks of Saint Basil of the Desert Eastern Orthodox Hermitage in Tucson, Arizona, have launched a new outreach ministry. Rooted in the teachings of Christ and the sacred dignity of every person, this initiative offers compassionate aid to the most vulnerable among us.

The ministry was formally established on June 14th, 2025, now widely observed as “NO KINGS” Day, a day of moral resistance against rising authoritarianism, xenophobia, and the renewed persecution of marginalized communities. On this day, people of faith declare that no human being is illegal on stolen land, and that to criminalize those seeking refuge is a grave injustice.

As Orthodox Christians, we confess that Christ is present in the stranger. We see the image of God in every migrant, every child at the border, and every person fleeing war or poverty. This outreach is not mere charity, but an act of repentance and solidarity, in obedience to the Lord’s command:

“For I was hungry and you gave Me food... a stranger and you took Me in...” — Matthew 25:35–40

In a world numbed by indifference, we choose compassion. In an age of cruelty, we choose Christ. Our ministry is one of presence, prayer, and provision, because the Church is only truly the Church when it stands with the crucified. And Christ is crucified today in every cage, every camp, and every border wall.

May the fire of the Holy Spirit move us to welcome the stranger, uphold justice, and proclaim the sacred worth of every human soul.

5) Eastern Orthodox Christians in Support of Ukraine & Ukrainians -  What began as a deeply personal mission by one of our Monks at the onset of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 has since grown into a shared commitment embraced by the entire brotherhood of Saint Basil of the Desert Eastern Orthodox Hermitage. In 2025, recognizing the continuing devastation inflicted upon the Ukrainian people, our monastic community formally took up this cause as part of our spiritual and humanitarian witness. This ministry is rooted in the sacred Orthodox calling to bear one another’s burdens and to stand resolutely with the innocent and afflicted, especially those suffering persecution, displacement, and violence. Through prayer, aid, and advocacy, we seek to embody the compassion of Christ amid the ongoing tragedy of war.

This ministry is organized around three essential pillars of compassionate action:
  1. Humanitarian Assistance
We work to provide direct and indirect humanitarian aid to those impacted by the war, both within Ukraine and throughout the global Ukrainian diaspora, including those who have resettled in our own local community of Tucson, Arizona. This includes support for displaced families, refugees, and others affected by the trauma of war, poverty, and exile.
  2. Support for the Orthodox Church in Ukraine
Recognizing the courageous and sacrificial witness of the Orthodox Church in Ukraine, often ministering under fire, in occupied zones, or amidst devastated cities, we seek to build spiritual and material bridges of support. This includes supplying liturgical items, monastic aid, and resources for priests and parishes struggling to care for their flocks in wartime.
  3. Aid for Ukraine’s Orphans
A special focus of our ministry is the care of orphans and abandoned children in Ukraine, many of whom have lost parents to war, disease, addiction, or displacement. We aim to support the Orthodox Church in Ukraine as it shelters, feeds, and raises these children in love and dignity, partnering where possible with monastic orphanages, local charities, and church-run care homes.

This ministry is not a political stance, it is an act of Orthodox Christian conscience, a response to Christ’s command to love our neighbor and defend the defenseless. In standing with Ukraine and her people, we witness to the truth that the Church must be a refuge in times of terror, and a beacon of hope in the midst of darkness.

“Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called the children of God.” (Matthew 5:9)

6) Eastern Orthodox – Orphans & Children of War Outreach

“Whoever receives one such child in My Name, receives Me.” — Matthew 18:5

Founded on August 18th, 2011 by Rassaphore Monk Vladimir, and in conjunction with the Orthodox Order of Saint Anna and its Grand Commandery of New Mexico & Grand Commandery of Arizona - Orthodox Order of Saint Anna, this outreach was originally established to assist orphans in Eastern Europe, especially in Ukraine, Belarus, Romania, Bulgaria, Serbia, and North Macedonia, as a Pan-Orthodox effort.

For Ukraine, our work began years before the present war, offering support to children who were orphaned due to poverty, illness, abuse, neglect, or the death of parents. Since the beginning of the ongoing conflict, the situation has grown even more severe, and the number of children in need has greatly increased.

Shortly after the war in Syria began, we expanded our ministry to Syrian orphans, and as further wars and humanitarian crises emerged in other regions, our outreach continued to grow so that no suffering child is forgotten.

While this work began with Rassophore Monk Vladimir and the Orthodox Order of Saint Anna, the St. Basil Orthodox Hermitage has now taken the lead in continuing and expanding this mission, as of November 8th, 2025, the Feast of the Holy Archangels. Our goals have not changed, only the urgency and scope of the needs we are called to meet.

We continue to work closely with the Orthodox Order of Saint Anna, and partner with NGOs, Orthodox parishes, monasteries, clergy, laity, humanitarian networks, and local caregivers, working with all who share the calling to protect and care for orphans, and children affected by war.

✥ How We Serve ✥
We support the care of orphans, and children of war by:
• Working with trusted NGO partners and Orthodox clergy on the ground
• Supporting organizations engaged in orphan care and orphanage operations
• Fundraising for Orthodox Church–sponsored orphanages and children in crisis
• Raising awareness of the needs and suffering of war-affected children
• Coordinating with Orthodox parishes, monasteries, and missions to send requested supplies directly to Aid Groups and Orphanages
• Providing food, clothing, hygiene care, medicine, school supplies, and shelter
• Assisting with education, trauma recovery, stability, and spiritual care

Every child is a living icon of Christ.
We do not take sides in political conflict.
We take the side of the child.
